Your track will definitely help. The fact that it is grey not so much.
I have found a friend's GPS a few years ago by backtracking to where we stopped for a lunch break. Was an 8km round trip but it was definitely worth it. His was a burnt orange type of colour, which made it easier to see. So, it can be done!

Hope it gets found BergAttie!
Don’t take my post too seriously. A lost gps when gps help us get unlost was the irony.
And it reminded me of the first time I switched on my first ever gps and the question that first appeared on the screen was ‘enter your position’. They’ve since got better.
