Hi all. You are all gonna laugh at me when I give my suggestion.

Its all good and well spending R3000 on a pair of boots. But a good mate and I sat down and spoke about it and realized that we were messing around with expensive boots. we hike mostly in the dralensberg and we looked at the Basothos. What do they where, GUMBOOTS. But before you protest that they are heavy and might get hot, look at this first.
They are
Waterproof
Steel cap toes for rocks etc
Becuz of the height of the boot you cannot twist your ankle
Snake bite prevention
Long lasting, great grip
And about R90-00 a pair.

How can every Basotho be wrong?

Just got a pair of Solomon Gor-tek shoes from CUM on their footware frenzy special last week, they weigh nothing and seem to be awesome...

@Caveman

Trust me you'll end up walking barefoot instead. I did a 8km hike in a mine once and believe me, gumboots SUCK!

I also thought of Gum boots at one stage but the proper ones imported from Europe. They sell for R1400 at Farmers market and might be an option. I'm not to sure about the ankle support though.

I don't know hey, iv done many hikes, walks, etc in my gummies and I'll never turn back. I was a skeptic at first but they work for me, maybe my mind tells me they are better, I couldn't spend R3000 on a pair of shoes. But that's just me hey.

And yet hiking boots are a hot item at places like the Amphitheatre.

But you do have a point Cave Man, I agree with you to an extent. As a matter of fact I've done a little hiking in gum boots. I lived in Sweden for a while some years back and used gum boots for fishing, even up in the mountains. They do have very good designs available there, not the like the industrial variety we have available here. They can become very hot and slippery.

As a matter of interest, has anyone else had problems with La Sportiva Typhoons???
Jackie and I stayed into this territory because of the light weight, and we ran with our tails between our legs a few months (Hikes) later. The seams coming undone after only 3 hikes, metal burs on the eyelets which chew up laces, shallow tread which wears very quickly, definitely not waterproof. Our stories are collaborated by 5 other friends who went down the same path. (yes I can provide the contact details). Such a pity when the Tibets are so good.. Perhaps the "Made in Vietnam" should have warned us.
In mitigation. The grip was good and they were light. Just not made for heavy backpacking and certainly not for the berg, Magalies or Drakens.
The local agent did compensate us eventually via Trappers, this took a while but Jackie got a good deal on her new Tibets and I actually got money back. Our new Tibets, purchased in May and July respectively were still made in Italy. Shows you what happens when you stray off the straight and narrow.

G

Not the Typhoons, but the Thunders in my case (I know Stijn also had issues with those). The Thunders are comfortable and affordable, but definitely not robust and long-wearing, and not waterproof enough. I had to send mine in for repairs on the seems half-way through. Interesting to note that just cause its La Sportiva does not mean that its good enough.

@ Jax I had excactly the same type of sticthing failure on my Montrail Torres, after quite a bit more milage though. What is interesting is if you look at the two boots the detailing, materials etc are identical, (same chinese factory different label?). Took them to a cobbler in Hillcrest who did a very good re-stitching job.It is very dissapointing given the money paid for these boots.
