Kids Mont-Aux-Sources weekend

Kids Mont-Aux-Sources weekend was created by Digz
I've been wanting to take my kids (age 10 and 12) to spend a night on the top of Mont-aux-sources for some time now, but have always been hesitant to go on my own with them, given the security risks. I'm interested to know if anyone feels the same and who would be keen to join in an informal sleepover so that we have security in numbers (and some of the Dad's can even take turns keeping watch if neccessary). Each family would still need to get to the top and have all their own gear and food etc...but we could agree on a time and place to meet before it gets dark. (eg Meet at the top of the chain ladders at 14h00 on Sat). I'm thinking late October. Good idea? Bad idea?

Hey Digz, a "sleep-over" sounds like fun, Wendy and I would be keen to join.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Good initiative Digz! I don't have kids and will join if I can, though my calender is a bit cluttered. It might be a good to prep the kids mentally: that their lives are not in danger because of the Basuths, but that theft is a real issue and that you will keep gaurd. I'm not a parent, but a proactive and positive mental prepping may be of great value in nurturing a love and enthusiasm for the Berg that is not vulnerable because of ignorance. Would also be good to present a balanced view of Basuthos, that they don't get a tainted view from the bad apples.

If anyone is coming from the PMB side, I'd be keen to join and split the petrol/tolls cost (although I also don't have kids). I don't plan on driving that far in my car (my car shakes at 100km/h and only gets 7km to the litre). I may have some friends who might be up for it (but none of them have cars suitable for the drive either).
Which weekend are you guys looking at? 2 of my October weekends are already booked, 1 provisionally being my second attempt at Bollard Willson loop (probably 8-9 October) and on 22 October the wargames team I coach will be trying to avenge their recent 17-16 loss at an interschool, so that should be good...

I would be keen on a mount-aux-sources trip and would be coming from PMB side
My car is old but does 16km to the litre.
I have no kids but am always keen to go for a hike. Will see closer to the time if finances let me.

Ok, my weekend of 29 October is now also booked (ironically I'm taking my former boss and his 14 year old son up Rhino).
@Splatcat: Cool, are you looking at driving to Witsieshoek or RNNP? I might have 3 other people who may be interested in joining, so if we split the petrol and tolls 5 ways, it shouldn't be too costly.

Ok, I'm able to do the weekend of 22/23 October. So far 4 adults have shown an interest, which is great, but surely there are some more parents (with families), who would like to join in for the weekend?
If diverian, ghaznavid, splatacat an intrepid can make it that would be great. I'm keen for it to be an opportunity for the youngsters though...

Won't make it either, but will continue to support and follow developments here.
This thread has shown me again that many folks in this community are keen to hook up for Berg trips. A good way to to get things going is simply to start a thread like this one. Make use of the Notice Board section. Also wanted to mention that "VE Berg Trip 2" will definitely happen, probably not this year though unfortunately. I've also noticed that several members are from Maritzburg - you guys should hook up. Click on the members list in your user menu and do a "contains any of" search in the "Town" field for "Pietermaritzburg pmb Maritzburg".
