Wolhuterskop / Bethlehem

Hello all.

I'm not too sure who of you know Bethlehem in the eastern free state & from the little that know this beautiful town even less would know of Wolhuterskop. Wolhuterskop is a small nature reserve +- 6km out of town which is home to many types of antelope & wildebees, & some birds & it's been home to even the almost extinct species of ouvolk.

tyrannus apostolic church had a gathering there the weekend of the 7-8 October this year.(who the hell gave the permission in the first place?) The area was left in a very shocking state (will upload some pictures soon)
Glass, liquer bottles, litter, condoms!!! & big scattered quantuties of toilet paper was all over the place!!!

Now my HUGE concern is that this was a trial run as to what will happen in the future!!! I've heard that this 'church' (more like a cult imho  ) is going to buy this awesome piece of earth & build homes there for their people & the animals can just "go into the eastern free state" as 1 of the guys said!!! I know it's a bit more complicated than that, but the reality is there that people with money can get their way with matters!

What counter measures are there to take or people to speak to regarding this?

I'm gonna try to contact the Parks & recreational dept & see if I can get any more info.

People can also visit the "Vrystaat" newspaper's facebook page & post comments there. You can mail your opinion to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Any input regarding this will be much appreciated (& by the animals too  )

Thx

J

What is the area zoned for? If it is currently a nature reserve is it really that easy just to buy it and build houses on it? If it is being re-zoned for this, where proper procedures followed, environmental impact assessments done etc? This is often where things go corrupt, so you could dig into that. Where are these people living currently? Do they have their own homes already?

Try to find some environmental activist groups for that area and get them onboard...I dont have any ideas about which group though. Facebook is a good way to get people aware and spread news, so use that to its full advantage.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.
