Protection for backpack as check in luggage
I've been looking for a way to protect our backpacks when checking them into the netherworld that is the airport baggage handling system. I was hoping that someone here has a genius solution that isn't too expensive.
My wife and I did a hike in the states last year and even though we wrapped our packs in security wrap they were still damaged by the handlers. We have two more trips coming up this year and I'd like to find a permanent solution that will keep them safe from damage and theft. (Preferably something that has one entry point that I can lock.)
We have an Osprey Aether 70l and an Arial 65l.
So far I have found the
• Osprey Airporter LZ www.ospreypacks.com/en/product/accessories_1/airporter_travel_cover
• Sea to Summit Duffle Bag www.seatosummit.com.au/products/outdoor/pack-converter-pack-cover-duffle-bag/?ref=outdoor
Both are around R600 which feels a bit steep for just a pack cover (or am I just being stingy?)
Ideally it would have to be light weight, because we still have to hike with it, but if we have to post it forward then so be it.
Any ideas?

I know there's an army surplus store in PTA where i should be able to find something like that.
I'm guessing here, but they're probably quite heavy? Do they fold up quite small?

- I wore my boots
- Wore my raincoat
- Had my down jacket in hand luggage
My pack was inside my check-in luggage and was empty, so no harm came to it. My luggage was also plastic wrapped. I put rubber caps over the points of my trekking poles, and taped newspaper over them just in case. Anything breakable was wrapped in clothing inside my luggage.
Be careful of what you put into hand luggage, though, I read about an SA climber who had his brand new climbing rope confiscated because he had it in hand luggage. Apparently a 50m 9mm rope is somehow dangerous - although I think you would need a pretty wild imagination to figure out how! A bit like when I travel for work and they tell me a stapler and staple remover are dangerous.

In your case I suggest you make a made-to-fit box for each pack using corrugated cardboard (lots outside the back of any retail store), duct tape, and a Stanley knife. When you get there just chuck it away, and make another one for the trip home. You can make it so its easy to open on one side if you have to be searched, then stick it closed again with duct tape. You can also rig up some carrying handles with rope/string/webbing/duct tape. And if it's a bit DIY you can spray paint it to match your outfit

Check out at Outdoor Freedom in Centurion what Northridge Duffles they have. Great value for money!

Alas, mine got mislaid, scaled on a fishing trip somewhere I think.....
Otherwise, I could have weighed it, and tested a pack in it.
