I can highly recommend dipping down into Elephant Gully - I haven't gone over Mahout yet though, and imagine the view from the top is good (as Riaang says). If you're looking at the Slingsby map then the path indicated goes through the gully - it's essentially the bit between the tops of Cockade and Xeni passes and you drop down between Mahout (meaning "elephant rider", I believe) and the Elephant (getting a pretty spectacular look at the Plume while you're at it). The point of descent into the southern gully entrance is shortly after the top of Cockade pass - I don't recall there being a cairn (there is a smaller one on the north side), but it's your last opportunity to descend - any further and you'll be going over Mahout.

There is a very clear path going into and up over the Elephant gully. At the top of Cockage pass simply turn away from the pass (south south west) and keep walking towards Mahout (the large piece of rock right in front of you
). Go up for Mahout or right and down for elephant.

Hi HannesT,
I can assist you with gps tracks and waypoints.
Please PM me with the passes you intend to use, unless you would like me to give you several pass options, and your email address.
