April 2014 Grand Traverse

An interesting comparison raised by Stijn, so the ascent and descent of the DGT are each some 2900 m less than the normal GT.

The ascent and descent of the extra explorations (mainly to summit twenty khulus) of our GT were 11840 m and 12635 m respectively, so about 1200 m more ascent and descent than the GT route. Not much per khulu, considering Gypaetus Point and Nhlangeni were substantial ascents and descents off the route, the other eighteen khulus which were all near the route average about 40 m to 50 m ascent and descent each.

Super pics and write-up. Was nice having a look again after chatting at Sabine's GT get together! :)

Tony this was a great documentary, thanks so much! It is a trip write-up which normally should be in the Trips category but I will leave this thread here since it provides a lot of step-by-step info for others who want to plan for a GT.

Equally impressive was the fact that you had long pants on (and they look fairly new?) ;)

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Thanks very much for the great trip report Tony. Myself and a few others are planning a similar route over a similar time frame in September this year. Will be interesting to compare experiences. I am hoping we have as good weather as you guys did!

Cheers!
