Magaliesberg security issues

I am hearing various reports of what has been going on here. Seems very serious. A gang of 10 armed men is reportedly responsible for several muggings (involving being tied up and threatened) and break-ins. I am waiting for some official report before repeating some of the details I have heard, but the situation is very serious.

The affected areas are: Buffelsfontein, Mountain Sanctuary Park, Utopia, Cederberg-Tonqunai, Sparking Waters Hotel and Grootkloof.

The MCSA advised it's members to stay away from Cederberg-Tonquani this weekend.

Efforts are being made to catch these guys.

Some arrests were made earlier this week, and hopefully this will stop the crazy crime wave that hit the region recently. The MCSA has lifted it's warning that it made end of last week. Note that there already were crime problems before this wave and these risks still remain.

Coincidently I was the recipient of this crime. Pretty much stole everything, my car keys which were attached to my backpack were cut off and left in my tent. Unfortunately a friends car keys were amongst clothing in his backpack and we're taken. In turn we had to get someone to come through with spare keys. We returned to the site earlier this year to find one of the backpacks stolen containing discarded items, it was rather nerve wrecking to be in the area after discovering the bag, everyone was quite eager to get out of the area after the discovery. Finally, I recieved a call recently from the MCSA, a member who was hiking found the car keys that were stolen nearby the backpack which we found. It is a real shame that this area is under attack, it's one of the most beautiful areas close to Pretoria but now we are forced to avoid it due to the security issues.

Do not leave your gear unattended in this area. I'd say the best it that this applies to the Cederberg campsite too.

Anyone know what the latest news is in terms of security in these kloofs? Have things quietened up a bit now i.e. is it safe to start venturing back into them?

I was in Boulder Kloof today on an MCSA meet. We even swam in the Lower Tonquani pools where some of the muggings have happened. Other parties where also out and about in Cederberg-Tonquani. Not aware of problems in very recent months. Personally I don't imagine that we have seen the last of the issues in this area, and conservatively I'd say there is always a risk. Others see it differently and are more relaxed about it.

Im not aware of more problems at Grootkloof either. Patrols have picked up on signs that some vagrants have been around though at start of the summer.

Update sent out today on the MCSA Joburg Section mailing list:

All members and permit holders please be extra vigilant as there has been a security issue at Upper Tonquani this last weekend. Three backpacks were stolen, although they were luckily found again. Thankfully no muggings took place.

Hi all

Does anyone know what the current state of security is at MSP and Cederberg?

My wife is on holiday visiting her folks abroad, leaving me all alone in JHB. To fight off boredom I was planning on a bit of a walk around on MSP and overnighting at the Cederberg camp on Saturday night. Is it a bad idea attempting it alone?

I have the permits from MCSA already and know the area well.

I just want a sense check about security and safety. Getting mugged and redistributing my gear isn't my idea of fun. Considering that I'm alone I already decided against audacious kloof exploration and just camping in stead.

Have not heard of recent issues. Going alone is theoretically always a higher security risk, on the other hand, the incidents in that area have shown that big groups are not a deterrent either. Chances are there might be other people around, and camping too, and you could also not camp right at Cederberg camp - there are many other good places where you would be quite hidden.

With the mining labour problems having scaled down (but not totally resolved), there seems to be fewer issues at the moment. Unfortunately the big unemployment in the general area will probably still feul crime etc. So we need to stay vigilant.

Ypu can phone and ask MSP if there were any recent incidents.

Recently most of the reported trespassing (but not MSP) was from church groups.
