So, I’m planning on heading to the Magaliesberg, MSP, Grootkloof sort of area. The plan is to camp at a central base and do day hikes/exploring of the various kloofs in the area. There will just be 2 of us and we’ll probably spend about 4 days, so it won’t all be over weekends.
1. What is the latest security update on the area (bearing in mind just 2 of us and on possible weekdays?)
2. I know one can camp at MSP, I see there’s also a caravan/camping park at Buffelspoort dam. And of course at the cederberg campsites etc. Are there any other good camping parks in the area that people would recommend and would be safe to leave tents etc at during the day?

Sounds like a lekker trip, enjoy!
Have a look at Bergheim as well, they also offer camping I think.

Hi John
There are three quite nice camp sites in that area:
(I'm assuming that you're a mountain club member because you mentioned Cederberg.)
Cederberg - A good option
Tonquani – At the top of the Tonquani kloof. The kloof splits in three and the camp site is between two kloofs running South and South West. The camp site faces the tallest wall of the Tonquani kloof. Probably the most secluded of the three. It has a food cage which should keep your food out of reach of monkeys, badgers and opportunistic trail runners.
Grootkloof – In the triangle formed between Ysterhout kloof, Woodpecker Gull and Grootkloof. S25°50'31.12" E27°24'25.58" You may be visited by a church group over the weekend here.
If you're not a MCSA member you can request a permit from them.
I must be honest, personally I would be hesitant to set up camp at any of these and leave my gear unattended while i go out exploring for the day. I am usually too careful when it comes to these kinds of things. Mountain Sanctuary might be the safest if you want to set up camp for 4 days and use it as a base camp.
Hope this helps

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

I was at Upper Tonquani in March. I found out that about 6 weeks prior to that there had been more incidents at Mountain Sanctuary. Apparently people near or at the Slide Pools were mugged, and in a separate incident, things were stolen from one of the tents again. One of the perpetrators was caught.

I've just heard that there was a recent mugging in the Magaliesberg by a group of "heavily armed men." I unfortunately don't know more than that at this stage, but I have asked my source for more info. Just thought I'd put it out there in case anyone is thinking of heading to that area this weekend. Did anyone else hear anything about this?

"Magalies" is quite a broad term. Would need specifics.
I know the Hekpoort part of the range is quite safe.
